Visiting the GP

Preparing for GP visits is great to focus on with your Speech Therapist. Preparation in written and pictographic format is key in conveying your symptoms, concerns and wishes for treatment.  I also encourage people to monitor their Blood Pressure with Home kits.

People’s Stories

Jill’s Story - Jill Bolte Taylor, a Neuroscientist, explains exactly what it feels like to have a Stroke.  This is an incredible insight and one that only those who have had a stroke really could relate to.

Ian’s Story - So often, people who suffer a Stroke really want people to just 'Say it as it is!' This article does that beautifully.  Ian's very candid account is a unique and valuable perspective.  I educate on the benefits of having grandchildren as conversational partners and certainly encourage it. Their communicative wisdom is second to none!

A Young Doctor’s Story - Surviving a Stroke, age 34 has its own story.  What I like about this article is that he talks about just how important it is to be listened to.  Many People think Speech Therapists just get you 'talking', but you may just find that your speech therapist could turn out to be your greatest listener.

Patricia Neal’s Story - A lesser known Fact! Roald Dahl's wife Patricia Neal suffered a Brain haemorrhage in 1965.  Her Aphasia that followed caused her to produce what Speech Therapists call 'Neologistic Output' or Nonsense words. Many of these wonderful word errors appeared in The BFG and some have now made it to this years Oxford English Dictionary inventory. I encourage my patients to enjoy their word errors too!

Communication Aids

This remains an interesting topic as I find myself adding 'Emoji's' / Emoticons to personalised Communication Aids, I'm really interested in Emoji code writers working to fill the Vocabulary gaps in Emoji production.  After all, it is the world's fastest growing language!
